Normally.. I ignore what any movie critic says about a movie I want to see… I figure their like the weatherman..the chances of them being right, are less then the chances of them being wrong.
I was reading CNN today, and came across a link to Entertainment Weekly’s review of Star Wars Episode III… and I have to wonder if the critic actually watched the movie….
Don’t read any further if you haven’t seen the movie, and don’t want anything given away…
I’m serious… stop now!!!! Possible Spoilers ahead!!!
To start with…This is the first negative review of the movie that I’ve come across…I”m not going to go through his whole review, but I am going to go through a few points…
“The Jedi Knights are on a mission to rescue Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), who has been kidnapped, and already there are hints of the conflict to come. As the two are attacked by spidery buzz droids, Anakin tries to shoot them off of Obi-Wan’s ship, an act of headstrong aggression that makes you think, ”With friends like this …”
Umm.. did you see Episodes I and II? This is how Anakin has always been portrayed.. not necessarily thinking of the consequences of his actions! He’s a young, powerful Jedi.. who thinks he can do anything.. This just helps show his over-confidence..
Lucas’ digital imagery allows for whizzy, swirling layers of technological hyperactivity, yet its lacquered gleam is just artificial enough that when a panoramic window gets smashed during a battle in the Jedi chamber, my reaction was to think, ”Gee, how will they find replacement glass that big?”
Ok..this is minor..but it just proves my point that he wasn’t paying attention to the movie.. There was no battle in the Jedi Council chamber. What he’s referring to is the fight between Master Windu and Chancellor Palpatine. And they’ll find the replacement glass, from the same glass store that replaced the window Obi-Wan jumped out in Episode II.
But since the ”Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo!” love scenes are embarrassments of cheesy acting and cheesier dialogue,
Ok… I’ll give you this one… nobody has ever accused George Lucas of being able to write a good love scene…
Anakin’s instincts may be noble, but when he’s chosen to be a member of the Jedi Council and yet denied the title of Master, the omission inflames his rage, a development that rings jarringly false. Anakin’s appointment is an unexpected honor for a young Jedi: Why would he suddenly be up in arms about not receiving the ultimate rank as well?
He’d be upset, because all the Jedi who serve on the Council are Masters.. and he wasn’t made a Master, because the Jedi didn’t promote him.. Chancellor Palpatine did..
Think of it as being told you now have all the responsibility of Chief Editor for Entertainment Weekly… but your pay level stays that of the guy who pushes the mail cart around.. all the work, none of the reward..
Ok..that’s it..I’m done with that one… if you came here looking for reviews of Episode III.. ignore the one from Entertainment Weekly..
The movie is good.. go see it.. Trust me..
