I’ve got this phone, and its been listed on the iSync page as being supported for bluetooth updating of information (contacts, calendar..etc..) via iSync… I’ve been fighting it to get it to work since I got Tiger.. no luck… until I found this post.
(read on for the details of the post)
Apparently…since Apple added the phone…there has been some changes in the Firmware that alter how the phone identifies itself… it sends its information as model 551J … not just 551. So… To update iSync manually… here’s the steps from the post mentioned above (note..if/when Apple updates iSync again..this will most likely break something…or just stop working)
Control-click on the iSync app
Show package contents.
Drill down as follows to the the MetaClasses.plist file in…
/Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns
/PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources seems to be a list of phone models and identifiers.
About 700 lines down is the V551.
<string>”Motorola CE, Copyright 2000″+”GSM900″,”GSM1800″,”GSM1900″,”GSM850″,”MODEL=V551″</string>
<string>”Motorola CE, Copyright 2000″+”GSM900″,”GSM1800″,”GSM1900″,”MODEL=V551″</string>
Make those say MODEL=V551J.
That’s it…resolves the whole problem.. its worked since I made those changes
once I drill down to:
/Applications/iSync.app/Contents/
I hit a dead-end, no PlugIns directory, and I tried using the search function in the Finder but to no avail… 🙁
iSync is 1.5 (v139)
any ideas why i don’t have the phone data in the package?
The only thing I can think of, is that iSync under pre OS X (10.4) which is iSync version 2.0, doesn’t have the same structure.. I don’t still having any machines running Panther or earlier to check, but that’s my guess.
Do you have a little more detail on how to perform what you listed. It just says to change the text and you are done. I opened that metaclasses file and it opened in omnioutliner. There weren’t any 700 lines like you had said and I did a search and found instances that looked like the lines you had and change the 551 to 551J but then I had to save the file and it saves it as a .003 and not a plist and needless to say, it was a mess and didn’t work. How do I need to edit this? Have you tried it over USB?
Are you using Tiger and iSync v2.x? If not, the instructions won’t work for you.. and one of the updates to iSync that has come out since Tigers original release (I think it was like 10.4.1) added the phone in to the supported list I think…making these instructions unnecessary….. and no, I’ve never used the usb cable
Also, I did the editing from the command line using pico, so I didn’t have to deal with Text-Edit, or any of the gui editors adjust the file type. if you’re not comfortable with the command line, TextWrangler is a free download, and it won’t mess with the command line (look for it on Verstiontracker)
Edited MetaClasses.plist with VI and iSync now works great, thanks for the tip.
I have a v551 and iSync 2.2.1. The problem I find is that the phone numbers and contacts from my Macintosh phone book are copied to the phone but the numbers on the SIM of the phone don’t get copied to the Macintosh. Anyone else had this experience and know a fix?
I’ve never tried merging the data between the two. My first guess, would be is the data set to be merged in your iSync device preferences, or is it set to erase device and then sync?
