Dream Machine

Yesterday, Apple introduced the Machine I’ve been waiting for, since before I bought the iMac G5… the dual, dual core PowerMac. That’s 4, count ’em 4, processors in the machine..PCI-Express, DDR2 RAM.. 2 gigabit ethernet ports….

And now..I’m faced with a small dilemma.. I was planning on buying this machine (I expected it to be announced back in June) and having it last me for a very, very, long time (I’m thinking 5-7 years minimum) now.. the machine is out..and I can’t decide if I should buy it, or wait, and get a dual, dual core x86 based Mac…which could be up to 2 years away (Apple doesn’t expect the x86 transition to be completed till ’07). Now..if I knew for sure that developers would release ‘Fat’ binaries for the next decade or so… it would be a no-brainer.. but..since I don’t know.. I’m now faced with the possibility that I might spend a lot of money (the first time I priced out the machine I wanted, it was only $6700-Feel free to send me a donation! =) ) for a machine I might get only 2-3 years of usage out of (as far as new and updated software is concerned.. obviously, existing software would continue to run until the machine stops working), or I can wait for up to 2 years for the x86 version of my ‘dream machine’…

sigh….I dunno… I suppose that since the Quads won’t be shipping for 3-4 weeks.. It wouldn’t kill me ot wait and see what x86 Macs are released at Macworld SF in January…

if this is the last PPC based PowerMac.. its definetly going out with a Bang!
