More Names

Janice and I were watching TV tonight.. and the trailer came on for Serenity, while it was running… it occured to me that there were some very good names in the series, that I hadn’t thought about adding to the ‘list’… so.. here’s my revised list:

Serenity Jaina

River Jade

Kaylee Jaina

Zoe (umm…I can’t think of a good middle name for Zoe)

Maryn Jaina

Asajj Jade

Mara Jade

Vegas Gold (Ok.. really.. I wouldn’t do that to the kid… but… its a good stripper name)

Aeryn Jaina

Unique Lawn

So, I was reading FARK tonight at work, and I found a link to this article. It seems a guy in Omaha was a bit upset about the city telling him he had “excessive grass and weeds” in his yard.. to get back at the city, he exercised his first amendment rights.. and mowed his response into the lawn.. while no one will say anything other then ‘it was a two word expletive’.. I have a feeling its ‘fuck you’ as, that would be my response to someone telling me that I needed to mow more often. Here’s my favorite quote from the article:

City codes dictate that lawns taller than 10 inches can be ticketed, but Parks and Planning officials said that unless the grass that formed the expletive met that criterion, there was nothing they could do to force its removal.

My guess is, that the city (and neighbors probably) will be a bit more careful from now on about asking this guy to mow his lawn…

Toddler Wisdom 6

“Don’t pee on the floor, pee in the potty”

This nugget of wisdom was uttered by Kael today, while Janice was getting him ready for bed (she’d gotten him bathed, and was getting his pjs ready).

Now while this might initially be seen as good…it wasn’t, you see as Kael was uttering these words of wisdom… he was peeing on the floor in his room!

When asked why he peed on the floor, after just telling himself not to pee on the floor.. he raised his hands (think raising your hands and shrugging for one of those ‘I don’t know moments’) and said “I just peed on the carpet”

Today’s Downtime

Err.. sorry bout that…

It appears that Dreamhost uses servers and internet connections that require electricity.. so, after the (probably now unemployed) Power Company worker shut off half of Los Angeles, Dreamhost no longer had a connection to the internet (and from this post on their blog, they had their own little catastrophe to deal with to).

From the Dreamhost blog:

When the power went out for the city, the UPSes came on, and things were fine (that’s when Nate made that last post about us being okay). However, as they started to run out the generators had to kick in. It turned out, and this is the boo-boo, the generators could NOT generate enough power for all the data centers after all! And so, rather than just doing some sort of lower-level of power output, they are apparently configured to all just shut themselves off when things are overloaded.

Of course, there are lots of people yelling at the DH guys for not keeping everything running during the outage..but.. DH also mentions that all 3 of their network providers were knocked out to..so it wouldn’t have mattered if DH’s building had been able to keep the power on or not (well..I guess it would have minimized the downtime).

Personally? I think they handled it pretty good..little room for improvement.. but, since its probably better then what I could have done had I been running my own server (ignoring the fact that I don’t live in LA, so the blackout didn’t affect me)..I don’t have any complaints…

Odd Keyboard

And then, here’s proof that odd items aren’t just marketed for your bedroom…

http://www.daskeyboard.com/

A solid black keyboard… no pesky decals or printing on the keys to worry about rubbing off… of course..that means you actually have to know where the keys are before you buy this keyboard.. since you can’t cheat and look down when you’re typing..

While I like the black keyboard part.. I don’t think the whole blank key thing is for me.. while I can generally type without looking…there are sometimes when I just have to sit and stare at the keyboard to try and figure out what I’m typing…

Huh?

Proof that people will buy anything:

Popgadget: Personal Tech for Women:

The bed linen come with a battery-powered device that reproduces relaxing sounds like the wind in the forest, bird singing, etc. For example, if you buy the dolphin model, you get the sound of the sea.

Apparently, having to reach over and turn the radio/tv/iPod/white noise thingy, or whatever on is to much work..so now you can just have your sheets make noise..

(insert obvious joke, about farting in bed to get the ‘wind in the forest’ sound here)

McDonald’s Playlands

You’ve seen these things right? a two story mess of hard plastic tubes for kids to crawl around and play in, windows to look out, slides to go down right?

Yeah… those tubey things? So not made for someone in excess of 6′ tall.. my body doesn’t bend in the directions it needs to bend to crawl through those things…

And of course.. Kael found my constant self injury crawling through there after him absolutely hilarious.. “Daddy bonk head again! HAHAHAHAHA Do it again Daddy!”

Anyone know where I can get a new pair of knees… cheap?
