Da Vinci Code : The Movie

On Saturday, Janice and I went to go see the Da Vinci code..

Neither one of us was really sure how good the movie was going to be. We didn’t want to put to much stock in what the reviewers said, because we had no way of knowing if the reviewer was one of the people who thinks the whole concept of the movie is blasphemy and should be banned..

So, since we had both just finished the book within the last week, we figured, what the heck.. good book..should be at least an average movie (Tom Hanks doesn’t make to many bad movies you know)

Overall… it was.. ok.. if I hadn’t just finished the book it probably would have been better.

I realize that you can’t turn a book into a movie, without changing somethings..But.. there were things that were changed for no good reason like these:

In the book, the first “clue” that is found outside of the museum, is supposed to be a big wooden box, so heavy that it can’t be carried in one hand.. in the movie? Little brown wooden box, maybe 4 inches long that can fit in your jacket pocket..

In the book, the contents of this big wooden box is a Cryptex, the contents of the cryptex… is another cryptex.. in the movie… they go straight to the second cryptex..

and there are lots of other ones like that… but… the big one, and the one that I think was the biggest impact on the movie:

They changed the ending..completely… When Langdon and the french chick go to scotland in the book to go to ancient Roslin… there, they meet french chickie’s grandmother and supposedly dead brother… in the movie.. an entire secret society piles into a little itty bitty church ( and really, how much of a secret can it be, if anyone walking by the church can see all of you?) Telling the girl that her grand father wasn’t her grandfather..just some random secret society dude that raised her after the car crash.

But, like I said, overall..good movie.. IF you’re not expecting it to follow the books major plotlines..or.. if you go into the movie and are able to watch it as a movie, separate from the book its based on. I recommend everyone go see it.. if for no other reason then to piss off the Catholic church, since they want it banned…
